RADICI DEL SUD 2018: THE WINNER IS TYPICITY
Exhibition of South italian wines
The 13th edition has just ended in Sannicandro di Bari with the prize-giving of the International Competition and a conference about native wines and restaurants
The thirteenth edition of Radici del Sud ended with the prize giving of the International Competition. A week long multi event where Apulia played a major role through BtoB meetings, press tours and finally the Exhibition of South Italian wines and oils open to the public. It was held at the Norman Swabian castle of Sannicandro di Bari and was joined by about 100 businesses exporting wine, oil and typical products.
More than 300 wines entered the competition divided according to the grape varieties and were judged by four tasting commissions: two made up of journalists, influencers and Italian and international wine writers; two were cies.
All the members agreed that the products have constantly increased their quality in the latest years thus making the wines from South Italian native grapes an alternative proposal to those labels which are more popular on a large number of markets.
The jury made up of journalists decided on the first places: Sparkling white wines from native grapes: three-way tie D'Araprì Pas Dosè, D'Araprì Spumante Classico and Leggiadro 2014, Producers of Manduria Sca; Rosé sparkling wines from native grapes: Centocamere Rosè, 2016, Barone Macri'; Falanghina: Elis, 2017, Elda Cantine; Grillo: Grillo Parlante, 2017, Fondo Antico; Greco: Greco Di Tufo Docg, 2017, Fonzone; Malvasia: Donna Johanna, 2017, Cantine Tre Pini; Fiano: Clara, 2016, Giancarlo Ceci Vini; Nero Di Troia: Augustale Castel Del Monte Nero Di Troia Riserva Docg, 2013, Grifo; Primitivo: Nivvro, 2016, Cantina Fiorentino; Aglianico: Vigna Dei Russi, 2013, Tenuta Cobellis; Minutolo: Tufjano, 2017, Colli Della Murgia; Rosé wines from South Italian native grapes: Terra Cretosa Aleatico, 2017, Borgo Turrito; Mixed group of white wines from native grapes: Civico 44, 2017, Tenuta Fontana; Negroamaro: Campo Appio Negroamaro, 2016, Cantine San Pancrazio; Mixed group of red wines from native grapes: Somiero, 2015, Le Vigne Di Sammarco; Nero D’Avola: Nero D'Avola Magaddino, 2017, Magaddino; Aglianico del Vulture: Michelangelo Doc, 2013, Cantina Del Vulture Soc Coop; Taurasi: Taurasi Rosso, 2012, Sertura;

The conference “Native wines and restaurants: identity challenging International markets” closed the event open to the public joined by a great deal of skilled wine connoisseurs. After Sannicandro mayor Beppe Giannone greeted the guests, there were the speeches made by Nicola Campanile, Radici del Sud planner, Francesco Bonfio, the president of the Italian wine shop owners Association, Alessandra De Candia, the vice president of Vinarius, Massimiliano Apollonio, the president of Apulia, Basilicata, Calabria Assoenologi Association and finally the chairman of the Apulian regional Council Mario Loizzo. What emerged were new ideas and proposals able to relaunch an effective cooperation between native wines of South Italy and Italian restaurants worldwide that may become a driving force for international markets to be penetrated.
“ New challenges and changes are waiting ahead of us for the next edition –said the organizer Nicola Campanile- Our commitment will increasingly focus on the knowledge and the history of the South Italian products to be spread and offered to international guests, thus reducing the prize wine competition”.
While waiting for the 14th Radici del Sud edition to be held from 4th to 10th June 2019, the organizers will already be working on “Waiting for Radici del Sud” from next 28th June onwards. It will take place in Fano at Osteria del Pisello and will deal with the 50 rosé wines of South Italy which joined the 13th edition, offering tastings and comparisons among the different areas suitable for rosé wines to be produced.
